What makes people decide to have counselling?

There are many reasons that individuals, couples, children and groups may decide that they wish to attend counselling. It can be extremely helpful to discuss your issues with a person who is removed from your circle of friends and family. We can sometimes feel that we don’t wish to burden our relatives and friends with our issues and it becomes easier to speak to a counsellor without fear of judgement. Not everyone who attends counselling is experiencing a crisis and sometimes it could be that you just feel there are issues that have not been dealt with from the past that you wish to understand more clearly.

Thanks so much for the work you have done with the girls. It has made a massive difference to our family. At one point we felt that the adoption was going to fail but they are so settled now it’s wonderful. Your support of the girls has been fantastic

Parent of adopted girls aged 6 & 8

I just want you to know that I appreciate you spending your own time to help me with my worries. Even when I was at the lowest point in my life (when Mam died) and I didn’t think I would smile again you made it possible and turned my life around. At times when I felt there was a huge hole in my heart you were by my side. You heard me and understood like no one else could. I think my heart may be healing now and it’s because of you. My sad tears are happy ones now all because you inspired me and taught me that other people's negative comments don’t matter

I don’t have to tell you how sceptical I was about this whole counselling carry on. I thought it was a total load of rubbish, how can talking to someone I don’t know help me? I take it all back! I totally get it now even though I still can't explain it. Thanks Claire I’ve told everyone about you and how amazing you are

I never would have expected my dad to come to see a counsellor, especially when he was told he was terminal. He had always been such a quiet and private man. I found a letter he had written explaining how important he found seeing you and I just wanted you to know that it was something that really helped him to cope
